Happy Holidays!
I wish you and your family a happy holiday season. With the arrival of Hanukkah and Christmas, I hope that you will enjoy spending time with family and friends, and I wish you good health and peace in the coming year. As Mort and I celebrate the holidays with our family we have so much to be greatful for, two beautiful grandchildren and two more on the way!
Looking forward to 2012, I am so thankful to represent such a vibrant and caring district. There is much work to do in our state, and I promise to make my last year in the House of Representatives a year of great accomplishments for my constituents.
My Work on the Environment Continues
Two weeks ago I spoke at the National Caucus of Environmental Legislators national meeting here in Chicago. We discussed Green Energy and its relationship to national security. Here I am with Adam Shafer of NCEL and Karyn Davidman of my district office.
I was also privileged to attend the National Conference of State Legislatures Nuclear Legislative Working Group Meeting last week. Nuclear safety and clean-up is an issue here in Illinois and around the nation. It was a fascinating event, and included an intergovernmental meeting with the U.S. Department of Energy. We learned that the federal Office of Environmental Management operates the world's largest nuclear cleanup effort, involving 2 million acres of land in 35 states, emplying more than 30,000 scientists, engineers and cleanup technicians, at a cost of more than $5 billion per year.
Special Legislative Session
We were in Springfield on December 12 for a special session. The legislature approved tax breaks for certain companies including Sears and the CME Group. I voted no on the bill. I surveyed the district and my constituents opposed tax breaks for these companies by more than a 2-1 margin. We need to get to financial health and then be able to give tax relief to all, not to a chosen few.
